With a waitlist of over 1,400, The Neighborhood Charter School is seeking to open a second school in the South Bronx in Community School District 7. If approved, the Neighborhood Charter School: Bronx will be a free, public K-8 charter school that will open with Kindergarten and 1st grade in August 2019.
The Need and Our Model
According to data reported by the New York State Education Department, CSD 7 represents one of the highest needs populations in New York City. On the 2016 state exam, 19% of students were proficient in English Language Arts and 16% in math. Our proven academic program will focus on making sure that our students in the Bronx are fluent readers and confident writers, have solid math skills, and become independent learners and critical thinkers.
We are proud of our school model that focuses on providing educational opportunities for students with special needs. We will be the first and only charter school in the Bronx to offer a specialized program for students with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Eight to ten seats are set aside in each grade for our ASD program.
Members of our staff will present to community groups, civic leaders, families, and local residents throughout the South Bronx as we prepare to submit our application to the New York State Education Department. Please contact us to learn more about our new school, attend a public meeting, or provide feedback.
